Tragedy Strikes M1 Freeway
On the 7th of April 2026 at around 17:30pm a heartbreaking incident unfolded on the M1 freeway. Inspector Xolane Mncube received urgent calls from members of the public reporting a family of Egyptian geese — two parents and five goslings — trapped on the fast lane. In the chaos of peak traffic, some of the babies had already been struck by passing vehicles, while the rest were desperately trying to cross.
Without hesitation, Inspector Mncube coordinated with JMPD for assistance. Officers quickly responded, escorting him to the scene and temporarily stopping traffic to allow for a rescue attempt.
Tragically, upon reaching the geese, it was discovered that they had already succumbed to injuries from the impact of vehicles. Despite the swift response, it was too late.
Inspector Mncube respectfully removed the animals from the freeway and transported them to the Sandton SPCA for cremation. This incident is a painful reminder of how vulnerable wildlife is in urban environments.
Always stay alert when driving, especially on highways near green spaces or water sources. Slow down if you notice animals near or on the road. Report wildlife emergencies immediately so authorities can respond quickly.
Every life matters.
“Let’s do our part to protect the wildlife that shares our spaces “, says Insp Manager Xolane Mncube.
